For most winter visitors, the best buy is a standard timed ticket booked online with Historic Environment Scotland (HES), which runs the castle. It is the cheapest way in. Pay more only if you need flexibility (the Flexi ticket), plan to visit several historic sites (the Explorer Pass), or also want the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Royal Yacht Britannia (the Royal Edinburgh Ticket). If you'd like a guide as well as entry, the Edinburgh Castle: Guided Walking Tour with Entry Ticket below puts both in one booking.

Edinburgh Castle tickets in winter: quick answers

  • Cheapest way in: a standard online ticket from the official site, £23.50 per adult. At the gate it costs £26.
  • Best for flexibility: the Flexi ticket, £38 per adult. You get one entry on any day within 7 days and don't pick a timeslot.
  • Best for several sites: the Historic Scotland Explorer Pass, £38 per adult in winter (from 1 November) for 14 consecutive days.
  • Can you buy at the gate? Sometimes, at the walk-up price. Once a date sells out online, the castle sells no tickets at all.

Prices from the official Edinburgh Castle tickets page, checked 26 October 2026. Some HES booking screens have shown different prices for some dates, so the price you pay is the one at checkout for your chosen date.

Three rules catch people out:

  • Students don't get a discount. HES offers no student rate on single tickets. Full-time students do get the concession rate on the Explorer Pass and on membership.
  • Every child needs a ticket. Under-7s go free, but you still add them to your booking. Under-16s must be with an adult.
  • There's no re-entry. Tickets are single-entry, so once you leave you can't come back in on the same ticket.

Book standard tickets on the official Edinburgh Castle ticket site, which shows live availability for each timeslot.

Beyond the castle ticket

Other Experiences You Might Enjoy

A castle ticket covers one morning. The rest of a winter day sits close by on the Royal Mile: The Real Mary King's Close beneath the High Street, the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the bottom of the street, and the Scotch Whisky Experience next to the castle Esplanade. Explorer Pass holders can add a day trip to Stirling Castle.

Family tickets

HES also sells family tickets in its online shop, covering one adult and two children, two adults and two children, or two adults and three children. Their prices aren't listed on the official tickets page and can change with the date, so compare them at checkout. At the standard online prices, two adults and two children (7–15) bought separately come to £70, which is the figure a family ticket has to beat. Children under 7 go free either way.

The Flexi ticket, explained

The Edinburgh Castle Flexi ticket gives you one entry on any day within a 7-day window that starts on the date you choose. You don't book a timeslot; you just turn up during opening hours.

  • What the flexibility costs: £38 against £23.50 for an adult, so £14.50 more.
  • Why it suits winter: November to February brings Atlantic storms, sleet and short days. With a Flexi you can skip a day of driving rain and go on the clear morning instead. You still need a dry-weather plan, though: if HES shuts the site for severe weather, a Flexi doesn't change that.
  • Who should skip it: anyone with a fixed itinerary. Book a standard slot and keep the £14.50.

Is the Explorer Pass worth it in winter?

The winter Explorer Pass costs £14.50 more than a single adult castle ticket. One extra paid site in your 14 days, such as Stirling Castle, Linlithgow Palace or Craigmillar Castle, usually covers the difference; check each site's current price before you count on it. For a family of two adults and two children, the winter family pass (£80) costs £10 more than four separate online castle tickets (£70), so it pays for itself on even one day trip.

A few rules apply:

  • Book your castle slot anyway. Pass holders still need a timed booking to guarantee entry, and must show the pass on arrival.
  • One visit per site. You can't go back to the same site twice on one pass.
  • No refunds. Passes are non-refundable, with no part refunds if a site closes for bad weather. HES says it may change the start date if there's availability.
  • Upgrading counts what you paid. If you've already bought a castle ticket from HES, it can be refunded when you upgrade to a pass, provided it's dated the same day or within the previous 2 days and you ask within a week.

One more date to know: Explorer Pass holders can't pre-book Stirling Castle in February and March 2027. Buy the pass on the official Historic Scotland Explorer Pass page.

Is the Royal Edinburgh Ticket worth it?

The Royal Edinburgh Ticket is sold by Edinburgh Bus Tours and costs £81 per adult, with castle entry guaranteed. According to the seller, bus staff book your castle timeslot when you validate the e-ticket, so you don't book directly with HES. That makes it handy when the official site shows a date as sold out.

The rough maths: castle £23.50, plus Holyroodhouse at £22 booked in advance (£26 on the day, per the Royal Collection Trust), plus Britannia at £22 online for November 2026 to March 2027 (£24 on the door), plus a Grand 48 bus ticket covering all three Edinburgh Bus Tours routes at £27.90 online (£31 on the bus). Bought separately, that comes to £95.40 online, or £98.50 if you buy the bus ticket on board. Against the £81 Royal Edinburgh Ticket, you save £14.40 to £17.50 per adult. Edinburgh Bus Tours' "Save Up To 25% (£27) Per Adult" claim reflects peak-season prices.

The winter catch: the Palace of Holyroodhouse doesn't open every day in winter. The Royal Collection Trust has listed it as closed every Tuesday and Wednesday from 15 September 2026 to 31 May 2027. It is also shut on 25 and 26 December, and the ticket offers no alternative on those days. A 48-hour window that falls on a Tuesday and Wednesday loses one of the three attractions, so check the palace's opening days and start your 48 hours between Thursday and Sunday.

Our verdict: buy it if you'll genuinely do all three attractions and ride the buses between the Old Town and Leith. If you're only doing the castle, it's poor value. The Royal Edinburgh Ticket is rated 4.7/5 from 3,175 reviews on GetYourGuide.

When does membership pay off?

An adult card membership (£72) costs about the same as three castle visits. It makes sense for UK residents, people on long stays, or anyone combining the castle with several Historic Scotland trips over a year. Membership also includes:

  • Free official guided tours. Everyone else pays £6.50 for the tour.
  • Cheaper afternoon tea. Members pay £45 for the Afternoon Tea Experience, against £70 for non-members.

A couple who book the tea and one other castle visit can come out ahead quickly. Paying by Direct Debit (UK bank accounts only) saves about another 10%, bringing the adult price down to £64 a year.

Third-party tickets and tours

Resellers such as GetYourGuide, Viator and Tiqets mostly sell guided tours with entry included, not plain admission. On GetYourGuide, the popular 90-minute castle tours start from $52 to $55 per person, and the 2-hour in-depth tour from $62. Most offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

What "skip-the-line" means: there's no hidden fast lane. Any pre-booked timed ticket, including the cheapest official one, already skips the ticket-buying queue. Everyone still goes through the same gate and the same security checks.

A warning: HES says lookalike websites sell fake tickets. Stick to the official HES webstore or a well-known booking platform.

Other bundles exist too. The Edinburgh City Pass "+ Castle" includes a Little Fish Tours castle walking tour with entry, from £70 for a 1-day adult pass. Tiqets sells an "Edinburgh Pass" covering a castle tour, Holyroodhouse and the Scotch Whisky Experience, from about €109. We haven't verified the current castle-and-Mary-King's-Close combination tickets, so check what's included before you buy. Our winter guided tour comparison sets the official tour against the 90-minute, 2-hour and Royal Mile tours.

Discounts and free entry

  • Carers: free. Book online; it's limited to two carers per transaction.
  • Young Scot cardholders (11–25): £1 entry. Book online and bring the card.
  • Serving British Armed Forces: free for the serving member. Book the "HM Forces" ticket and bring your MOD 90 card.
  • English Heritage, Cadw and Manx members: half price in your first year of membership (£11.75 adult), and free for renewal and life members.
  • Historic Scotland members and Explorer Pass holders: free entry. Book a slot to guarantee it.
  • Historic Sundays (Scottish residents only): free entry on the first Sunday of each month from October 2026 to March 2027, with the January date moved to Sunday 10 January 2027. Edinburgh Castle takes part, but its slots go quickly: it showed as fully booked when we checked in late October. Tickets are online only, released ahead of each date on the Historic Sundays page, and you may need proof of address.

Add-ons: audio guide, guided tour and afternoon tea

  • Audio guide: £4. Hire a device at the audio booth, or buy the download with your ticket and save it before you travel, because signal on site is patchy. It comes in 13 languages, and members and pass holders get 20% off.
  • Official guided tour: HES sells a combined "Guided Tour and Admission" ticket. The 30-minute tour adds £6.50 per visitor to your admission and is free for members. Winter departures (1 October to 31 March) are at 10.15am, 11.15am, 12.15pm, 2.15pm and 3.15pm. Arrive at the meeting point 15 minutes early, because if you miss your start time you can't join any tour that day. Tours run outdoors and in English only, and if bad weather cancels one, the tour fee is refunded automatically. Our winter guided tour guide compares it with the longer tours.
  • Afternoon tea: the package includes castle entry and costs £70 per adult (£80 with Champagne) and £35 per child. Members pay £45. If you already have entry (Flexi, Explorer Pass or a partner ticket), the tea-only option is £50. At £70, the package costs less than tea-only plus a standard ticket. The menu turns Christmas-themed from 1 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 on selected dates; our Edinburgh Castle at Christmas guide has the festive sittings. Afternoon tea is sold only through the castle, so book afternoon tea on the official site.

Winter opening hours and the busiest dates to book

Winter opening hours:

  • 1 October to 23 December: 9.30am–5pm, last entry 4pm.
  • 24 December: last entry 3pm, closes 4pm.
  • 25–26 December: closed.
  • 27–31 December: normal hours.
  • 1 January: opens 11am.
  • From 2 January: normal hours resume.

When to book: HES releases tickets "a few months in advance", and morning slots tend to sell first. In November and early December, a week or two ahead is usually enough. For 27–31 December, the castle's first days back after Christmas and the run-up to Hogmanay, and for Saturdays during Edinburgh's Christmas (14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027), book as soon as your dates are fixed. That advice comes from visitor reports, because HES doesn't publish sell-out data. Our Christmas guide covers the Christmas market below the castle and the Hogmanay fireworks, so you can plan around those dates.

What's on this winter: Castle of Light has been cancelled for 2026, and HES says it is putting the money into its daytime festive programme instead (the background is in our Castle of Light update). Victorian Christmas living-history performances run on 5, 6, 12 and 13 December 2026.

Winter tips:

  • Aim for the 9.30am slot or one after 2pm. Daylight fades around 4pm, so if you want views from the ramparts, arrive early.
  • Wrap up for the exposed ramparts: a windproof layer, a hat, gloves and shoes with grip for wet cobbles.
  • Stay somewhere near the Royal Mile to keep the walk up to the castle short; the Edinburgh Castle in November guide has suggestions on where to base yourself.
  • New to the castle in winter? Start with that November guide, and don't miss the Crown Jewels, which are included in every ticket.

Policies: late arrival, refunds and weather closures

  • Late arrival: HES says it will "do our best to fit you in". If your slot is full, you wait for the next available one. You can't arrive before your slot.
  • Refunds: official tickets are non-refundable. Date changes are possible if there's availability, through the HES change-request form; the terms say to ask within 7 working days of ordering.
  • Weather closures: high winds or snow can shut the castle at short notice; it closed for the whole of Sunday 25 October 2026 because of high winds. Check the HES closures page on the morning of your visit. If HES closes the site unexpectedly, dated tickets are refunded in full, and HES texts or emails you about rebooking or a refund. Poor weather alone, when the castle stays open, doesn't qualify.
  • Mobile tickets: e-tickets come by email. You can show them on your phone, add them to Apple Wallet or print them.

Which Edinburgh Castle ticket should I buy?

  • Fixed dates, castle only: a standard online ticket.
  • Uncertain weather or a loose plan: the Flexi ticket.
  • Castle plus one or more Historic Scotland day trips within 14 days: the winter Explorer Pass.
  • Castle, Holyroodhouse and Britannia over 48 hours, on days the palace is open: the Royal Edinburgh Ticket.
  • UK resident or repeat visitor: membership.
  • You want a storyteller and free cancellation: a third-party guided tour such as the Edinburgh Castle: Guided Walking Tour with Entry Ticket.
  • Special treat or Christmas trip: the afternoon tea package.
  • Scottish resident on a budget: Historic Sundays.
