Yes, an Edinburgh Castle guided tour is worth it in winter if it's your first visit. A good guide turns a confusing hilltop "village" of batteries, barracks and chapels into a story. Just know before you book that no guided tour takes you inside the buildings. Our main pick, the Edinburgh Castle Guided History Tour with Tickets by Little Fish Tours, includes your entry and a 90-minute guide.

Edinburgh Castle guided tours in winter: quick answers

  • Is a guided tour worth it? Yes, on a first visit. Every tour stays outdoors, so you see the Crown Jewels and the Great Hall on your own afterwards.
  • Cheapest option: the castle's own 30-minute Official Guided Tour, which adds £6.50 to a standard ticket: £30 for an adult with admission.
  • Best overall: the Little Fish Tours 90-minute tour, the Edinburgh Castle Guided History Tour with Tickets. It costs £39 with entry when booked direct and runs at 10.30am and 1.30pm in winter.
  • Best for families: the official 30-minute tour. It's short and cheap, and it's over before small hands get cold. Children under 7 go free on Little Fish tours.
  • Winter tip: book a morning slot. Last tickets are sold at 4pm, an hour before closing, and in mid-December the sun sets at around 3.40pm.

Prices and schedules checked October 2026. Third-party prices vary by date, currency and booking site, so treat them as "from" prices.

Why winter is a good time for a castle tour

November to February is the quiet season on Castle Rock. With smaller crowds you can hear your guide properly, you get more room on the ramparts for the views over the New Town, and the queue for the Honours of Scotland afterwards is shorter. If you're still deciding when to go, our Edinburgh Castle in November guide covers the month in detail.

Before you book, know that every Edinburgh Castle guided tour is an outdoor tour. Historic Environment Scotland's own groups-and-guiding leaflet says guiding isn't allowed inside any roofed building at the castle, and "this includes remote guiding from outside." That rules out the Great Hall, the Royal Apartments, St Margaret's Chapel, the Honours of Scotland exhibition and the Crown Room. Little Fish Tours is blunt about it: "the entire tour takes place outside." In winter that means 30 to 120 minutes on exposed, sloping cobbles, so your clothing matters as much as your choice of tour.

The castle is open 9.30am–5pm daily from 1 October to 31 March, and HES's guiding leaflet says the last tickets are sold an hour before closing, which makes 4pm the last entry. It closes early on 24 December, is shut on 25 and 26 December and opens at 11am on 1 January. Ticket prices, the Flexi ticket and the passes are in our winter tickets guide.

After your castle tour

Other Experiences You Might Enjoy

A castle tour fills a winter morning. Spend the afternoon indoors on the Royal Mile: under the street at The Real Mary King's Close, at a tasting in the Scotch Whisky Experience beside the Esplanade, or in the state apartments of the Palace of Holyroodhouse. After dark, the South Bridge vaults and Greyfriars Kirkyard host Edinburgh's ghost tours.

The Edinburgh Castle official guided tour, explained

The official tour is run by castle staff, and it's the cheapest guided option.

  • What you get: a 30-minute guided walk in English, delivered through a portable wireless receiver and headset.
  • Price: the tour costs £6.50 per visitor on top of admission, and HES sells it as a "Guided Tour and Admission" ticket. With the £23.50 online adult ticket that makes £30. HES's tours page doesn't list combined prices, so the concession and child figures are our arithmetic: £25.50 for a concession (65+) and £18 for a child (7–15), using the standard online prices. The tour is free for Historic Scotland members; Explorer Pass holders pay the £6.50, and carers go free.
  • Winter times (1 October to 31 March): 10.15am, 11.15am, 12.15pm, 2.15pm and 3.15pm.
  • Rules: you must pre-book. Arrive at the Tour Meeting Point (just through the Main Gate, on the right) 15 minutes before your slot. If you miss the start, you can't join that tour or any later tour that day.
  • Weather: tours may be changed or cancelled in poor conditions. If yours is cancelled, HES emails you and refunds the tour price automatically.
  • Route: regulars on the Tripadvisor forum say the route runs from the Portcullis Gate up to Crown Square. It's steep and cobbled, so wear sensible shoes.

Verdict: this is the best Edinburgh Castle tour for travellers on a budget, families and anyone who wants a quick orientation before exploring alone. Book the 10.15am or 11.15am slot in winter, and you'll still have the rest of the day for the Crown Jewels. Book it on the official tours page.

Short reviews of each pick

1. Official HES Guided Tour: best value

The cheapest guided option, and the only one run by castle staff. Headsets mean you can hear the guide over the wind, and the tour fee comes back automatically if weather cancels it. The downsides are the length (only 30 minutes), English only, and a strict rule on late arrivals. Book the official guided tour.

2. Little Fish Tours Edinburgh Castle Tour: best overall

Winter departures are daily at 10.30am and 1.30pm, starting from the Adam Smith statue at 192 High Street. Prices are £39 adult, £37 concession and £31 child (7–15), and under-7s go free. The route takes in the Esplanade, the Argyle Battery and the One O'Clock Gun, Hospital Square, the prisons of war, St Margaret's Chapel and Mons Meg, and finishes in Crown Square. On GetYourGuide it's listed as the Edinburgh Castle Guided History Tour with Tickets, rated 4.8/5 from 12,831 reviews.

It has excellent reviews and a clear weather policy: it cancels only if winds exceed 65kph (40mph) and the castle closes, in which case you can transfer or get a full refund. It's entirely outdoors, though, so leave at least an hour afterwards for the museums.

3. Scotland City Tours 90-minute Guided Walking Tour: best for languages

The long-running bestseller, sold on GetYourGuide as the Edinburgh Castle: Guided Walking Tour with Entry Ticket and rated 4.7/5 from 14,538 reviews there. It meets at 351 High Street, opposite St Giles' Cathedral; look for the black umbrella. Groups are capped at 30, and Tripadvisor lists live guiding in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian. Booking direct costs £39 per adult, or £20 if you already have a castle ticket, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

You get a choice of languages and a guide-only option if you already hold tickets. On the other hand, groups can be large and the tour stays outdoors.

4. EDI Tours 120-Minute In-Depth Tour: best for history lovers

The Edinburgh Castle 120-Minute In-Depth Tour with Expert Guide is rated 4.9/5 from 3,259 reviews on GetYourGuide. It meets at the David Hume statue on the High Street, includes a castle map and covers quieter corners such as Hospital Square and the Western Panorama. That's the most time with a guide of any regular group tour, although two hours outdoors in December is a lot. One Viator reviewer said their "2-hour" tour finished in 90 minutes, and the itinerary can change around military ceremonies.

5. Castle and Royal Mile combinations: best for first-timers

Clan Pascual Tours' Edinburgh Castle & Royal Mile Walking Tour meets at 180 High Street (look for the navy umbrella) and walks via St Giles', Victoria Street and the Grassmarket before ending inside the castle. It's rated 4.8/5 on GetYourGuide. Mercat Tours' "Secrets of Edinburgh's Royal Mile" adds a 45-minute castle introduction, for 2 hours 15 minutes in total; Mercat suggests allowing another 1.5 to 2 hours afterwards, and offers a full refund if you cancel more than 24 hours ahead.

You get the context of the whole Old Town, but you also spend the longest time outdoors of any option, and only part of the tour is inside the castle walls.

6. Kilted guide tour: best for atmosphere

Edinburgh Capital Tours guarantees a local guide in a kilt on its Edinburgh Castle Tickets & Tour with Kilted Guide. It's 1.5 hours with entry included, from $52, and rated 4.8/5 from 1,438 reviews on GetYourGuide. It's fun and very Scottish, but the kilt adds theatre, not extra access.

7. Harry Potter tour with castle entry: best themed option

London Top Sights Tours sells a 4-hour product that combines a 2-hour guided Harry Potter walk around the Old Town with castle entry, with morning and midday start times. You get two experiences for one price, but treat the castle part as self-guided. Our Harry Potter in Edinburgh guide compares the Potter walks themselves.

Budget hack: the Edinburgh City Pass + Castle includes the Little Fish castle tour with entry. A one-day adult pass is £70 (£55 child), and two days cost £90. It only pays off if you'll use several of the 20-plus other attractions it includes.

Private and foreign-language Edinburgh Castle tours

  • Private guides: Little Fish Tours charges £180 for the first hour and £80 for each extra hour, and can include castle access. Tour Guide Agent's "Classic Edinburgh Private Tour: Edinburgh Castle & Royal Mile" costs from £295 for a group of 1 to 20. It lasts 4 hours with a Blue Badge STGA guide, castle tickets are extra, and there's a non-refundable £30 booking fee. In a 7 May 2026 update, the Scottish Tourist Guides Association counted 309 Blue Badge guides and 189 Green Badge guides. On GetYourGuide, the Greyfriars Kirkyard and Edinburgh Castle Private Guided Tour (from $218, rated 5.0) pairs the castle with Greyfriars; castle tickets come only with its 4- and 5-hour options.
  • Spanish: GetYourGuide has listed "Edinburgh Castle: Guided Tour in Spanish", a 2-hour tour with entry starting at 190 High Street, from about $51. Search the Edinburgh tours on GetYourGuide for current dates.
  • Italian: a 2-hour Italian-language tour with entry has been listed on GetYourGuide from about $52.
  • French and German: Scotland City Tours' 90-minute tour lists both languages. Check your specific date when booking.
  • Audio guide alternative: the official audio guide comes in 13 languages, including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin and Korean.

Opinion on Tripadvisor's Edinburgh forum is split. Some say the guide "makes the history come alive". Others prefer the audio guide because it goes inside the buildings at their own pace. Our take: in winter, do both. Book a short official tour (or a 90-minute tour) to get your bearings outside while it's light, then head indoors with the £4 audio guide to warm up. Our Edinburgh Castle tours guide covers the same choice for the rest of the year, including what to see inside.

Winter tips: timing, weather and what to wear

  • Go early. Book a slot between 10am and noon. The earliest sunsets of the year come in mid-December, at around 3.40pm, and on the solstice (21 December) there are only about 7 hours of daylight. A 1.30pm 90-minute tour leaves very little time indoors before the 5pm close.
  • Check the weather the day before. HES may cancel official tours and refund the fee. Little Fish cancels only in winds above 40mph when the castle shuts. The castle closed for the whole of Sunday 25 October 2026 because of high winds.
  • Dress for standing still. Wear a windproof, waterproof layer, a hat, gloves and grippy shoes for wet cobbles.
  • Pack light. Bags of 30 litres or more aren't allowed inside Edinburgh Castle, and there's no left-luggage.
  • Festive extras: HES's Victorian Christmas living-history performances run on 5, 6, 12 and 13 December 2026, so time your tour around them. Christmas afternoon tea (which includes admission) runs from 1 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. Our Edinburgh Castle Christmas guide covers both, plus the Christmas market below the castle.

Evening add-ons: ghost and vault tours

There's no Castle of Light this year. On 1 October 2026 an HES spokesperson told STV News the show was "no longer sustainable" and that leadership had decided "not to extend the contract." HES said it would invest instead in "brand new decorations, family activities and our popular Christmas afternoon teas." The show drew more than 200,000 visitors after it launched in 2019; the background is in our Castle of Light update. For after-dark atmosphere, head underground:

  • Auld Reekie Tours: the Haunted Vaults Tour costs £24 and lasts 60 minutes (5pm and 7pm departures; not for under-12s). The Vaults & Graveyard Tour costs £26 for 90 minutes, and the Terror Tour costs £26 for 75 minutes.
  • Mercat Tours: VisitScotland lists the Historic Vaults from £27 and the 2-hour Evening of Ghosts & Ghouls from £31 per person. On GetYourGuide, Mercat's Multi-Sensory Small-Group Historic Vaults Tour starts from $36 and is rated 4.7/5.

Our underground vaults and ghost tours guide compares the evening tours. If you're in town for New Year, the Christmas guide also covers the Hogmanay fireworks launched from the castle.

How to choose: a quick checklist

  • Under £35 and short on time? Take the official tour.
  • First visit and you want the best stories? A 90-minute tour: Little Fish's Edinburgh Castle Guided History Tour with Tickets or Scotland City Tours.
  • History buff who doesn't mind the cold? EDI Tours' 2-hour tour.
  • Want the Royal Mile too? Clan Pascual or Mercat.
  • Prefer a language other than English? The Spanish or Italian tours, or the audio guide.
  • Need flexibility or have mobility needs? A private guide, or the audio guide at your own pace.
  • Staying nearby? A central base near the Royal Mile makes an early slot easy; our November guide suggests where to stay.
